A bit about me
I spent the early part of my career on the client side, then inside larger studios, watching that gap play out from both sides of the table. Agencies would arrive with a beautiful deck and no real grip on the business underneath it. Founders would arrive with total command of the business and no framework for explaining it to anyone who hadn't lived it. Neither side was doing anything wrong — they just weren't solving the same problem.
That's the gap I work in now. Before any identity work starts, I want a founder to be able to say, without hesitating, what their brand is for and who it's for — because everything after that, the name, the visuals, the tone, the systems a growing team can actually use, gets easier once that's settled. It's less exciting than a big creative reveal. It's also the part that actually holds up once the business starts moving faster than any one person can keep track of.
In practice, that means I spend more time asking questions early than most people expect, and less time presenting concepts nobody asked for. I'd rather spend an extra week making sure we're solving the right problem than three months building the wrong answer beautifully. It tends to be the difference between brand work a team actually uses, and brand work that quietly gets ignored six months after the handoff.
Almost every founder I've worked with is brilliant at the thing their business actually does, and slightly too close to see how it comes across from the outside. They can tell you exactly what makes their product different in a two-hour conversation. Ask them to say it in one sentence on a website, and the answer changes depending on who's asking.
